This ‘eldorado of Italian wine’, as it has been defined, finds its roots in the generous nature, in the climate, and in the special talent of the producers. Along the ‘Strada del Vino’, a very charming itinerary with woods and hills on one side, and the sea on the other, you can find farms, wineries, parish churches and castles set in magnificent surroundings.
The gastronomic specialities from the Etruscan Coast are famous worldwide for their generosity and variety. Fish, caught every day, is the main ingredient of thousands of delicious recipes: from the legendary ‘cacciucco alla livornese’, a fish-soup specialty from Livorno, to rice with cuttlefish, as well as sea bream, gilthead, squids, shellfish, mackerel, everything prepared with inspiration and skill. The main ingredient of the inland gastronomy is, on the other hand, meat, like the ‘chianina’ of first-class quality and game, in particular wild-boar. Vegetables are served with every dish. Typical local products are cheese, honey, bread, desserts, chickpea pie and ‘ponce alla livornese’ (coffee with liqueur).
